Vegetable tanned leather
There are several ways to tan leather. These all have their own advantages and disadvantages. The oldest and most natural way to tan leather is called vegetable tanned. Vegetable materials, such as tree bark, are used to process the animal skins. This is necessary to make it easier to remove the hairs and the grease layer and to be able to work the leather more efficient and in a better way. The natural qualities of the leather are also retained, such as being able to 'breathe'. The process of tanning in this way takes one up to a maximum of three months. The only disadvantage of vegetable tanned leather is that contact with water affects the shape stability and color fastness. With prolonged exposure to water, it can also shrink slightly and / or become less flexible. We therefore advise not to wear your LUPI ROMANI bracelets during showering and / or swimming.
Another way to tan leather is with the help of chrome. This way exists since 1858 and ensures that tanning goes a lot faster, even within one day! That is why this is often used in large-scale production. A disadvantage is that chrome is a heavy and toxic metal and for that reason harmful for environment and health. During tanning the chrome ends up in the water used and must be filtered out.
